So I’ve lived in Fargo for a year and a half now. For much of my first year here, I spent a lot of time by myself. I can count on one hand the number of times I went out. Yes, I know it’s pathetic, but I’m slightly socially awkward and I didn’t really feel like investing the time or energy to put myself out there. (It didn’t help that a copule times I’d tried to organize something, no one was able to come.)

My boyfriend moved in with me in October and of course it has been wonderful to have him here. Not only is it great to see him every day, but he’s also helped me become more social. I’m still no social butterfly and it often times takes me a while to click with people, but I’ve had a lot of fun in the past few months. I kind of forgot how great it is to throw things out there and end up with an awesome night (and many unflattering photographs). Some of the people we’ve been hanging out with are people I work with at NDSU. It sucks that it took us this long to get to hang out, but I’m so glad we finally are.

So thank you to Team Scotland and others for some wonderful times. Here’s to many more.

I did not like Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

I saw the new Harry Potter flick on Friday night. I was less than impressed, mainly because the movie deviated so far from the book (which is an unfortunate flaw in ALL the HP movies). If you haven’t seen it yet, I wouldn’t recommend reading the rest of this post. So, here it goes, the main reasons that Harry Potter 6 made me angry (in no particular order):

1. The fact that the horcruxes were completely overlooked: Harry learns a decent amount about Voldemort’s horcruxes from Dumbledore before he dies. What does the movie viewer find out? Very little. There’s approximately ZERO reference to the ring, which plays a huge role in the seventh book (and i’m assuming movie). There was too much focus on the love aspect of the movie and not enough focus on the horcruxes.

2. The fact that the Weasley’s house got destroyed: Why exactly was it necessary for Bellatrix Lestrange and Fenrir Greyback to show up at the Burrow and lure Harry away from the house and then set it on fire? THIS DID NOT HAPPEN IN THE BOOK. The whole beginning part of the seventh book takes place at the Weasley’s house, so it will be interesting to see how they make that work in the movie. I don’t understand why they always feel the need to add things or change things from the books. The books are incredibly interesting on their own and I feel like the movies end up doing the books a disservice because they are so far off-base.

3. The fact that Harry wasn’t pertified when Dumbledore died: In the book, Harry is pertified and can’t do anything about Snape killing Dumbledore. In the movie, Harry is just watching quietly under the platform and it seems like he can do something to stop it from happening. The event kind of loses its significance because Harry knows Dumbledore is dead when he is no longer petrified.

4. The fact that there is no battle at the end: The Death Eaters easily get into Hogwarts, kill Dumbledore and then get out again. WTF? After the rest of the movie was disappointing, I was looking forward to the final battle between the Death Eaters and the Order of the Phoenix. Including that part would have added some much needed action to the movie as well as remaining more true to the book.

Sigh, there’s more, but I don’t feel like getting into it right now. I keep hoping that one of the Harry Potter movies will stay true to the book, but so far it hasn’t happened. Well, there’s still two more chances to get the story right.

After my post about Favre yesterday, I was kinda hoping I wouldn’t hear anything else about it for a while. I was WRONG. I turn on Sportscenter this morning and what is the first thing I see? Brett Favre in a Jets uniform and the anchor is talking to John Clayton. It was promptly muted. What a crappy way to start the day. I’m already sick of hearing about Favre maybe potentially playing somewhere this season.

I may have to boycott Sportscenter since I can’t handle the Favre thing, baseball is not very exciting and the NBA sucks. The only thing worth watching on Sportscenter right now is highlights from the Caps/Pens series – but I’m sure if I look hard enough, I can find those online.

Although it will mean that I have to find a new program to watch as I’m eating my cereal in the morning, Sportscenter just isn’t cutting it anymore. I’ll go back to it once football starts again, but right now, it sucks.

On a different note, I wish i got Versus because this Caps/Pens series is rockin! Hat tricks from both Ovechkin and Crosby in one game – that is just sick! Ovechkin is the man - his third goal was absolutely brilliant. Go Caps.

Brett Favre should stay retired

There’s rumours going around that Brett Favre is going to try to return to football, potentially with the Minnesota Vikings. Just knowing that there is a possibility of a will he/won’t he summer ahead makes me want to bang my head against the wall. Brett, please stay retired. You have nothing left to prove on the field. If you must be involved with football, head to the coaching side of things.

All the Favre drama of the past year has really diminished my respect for him. I hate the wavering. Either say you want to continue to play or just stay retired. Don’t do any of this, I want to stay retired for now crap. Ugh.

If he does sign with someone, I hope it all gets figured out in a day. Two max. All I know is that I don’t want to hear about it all summer.

The NFL draft sucks

I hate the NFL draft. It is so ridiculously hyped and overblown and time-consuming. I hate turning on Sportscenter in the morning and hearing people hem and haw over who so-and-so should take in the draft (they even do it on the clock! how charming). Honestly, you’re telling me that these teams are taking players on/off their draft boards based on facebook and other such nonsense and they don’t know who they are going to pick already? I call B.S. on that one. The whole draft should take about three hours total – all seven rounds. Teams do not need that much time to make their choices. I can’t believe people actually go to the draft and cheer for their team’s picks. I would fall asleep or stab myself in the eye out of boredom. I can’t wait til it’s all over and I can stop hearing about it until next year.
